Summer is one of my favourite times of year. Holidays are booked, the weather is (usually!) a bit brighter, and everyone starts looking forward to spending more time outdoors.
But while sunshine can do wonders for our mood, it can be a different story for our hair. Between UV exposure, swimming pools, sea water, and heat styling, summer can leave hair feeling dry, faded, and harder to manage.
As a hairdresser in Clitheroe, I often see clients return from holiday with hair that's looking a little more tired than when they left. The good news is that with a few simple steps, you can enjoy your summer without sacrificing healthy, beautiful hair.

Protecting Your Hair From UV Damage
Most of us are careful about protecting our skin from the sun, but hair needs protection too.
UV rays can affect both the condition and colour of your hair. Natural and coloured hair can become drier, while colour-treated hair may fade more quickly after prolonged sun exposure.
The experts at Aveda explain that UV exposure can weaken the hair cuticle, leading to dryness and reduced shine over time. Their summer hair care advice highlights the importance of protecting hair in the same way we protect our skin.
Simple ways to protect your hair include:
Wearing a hat when spending long periods in the sun
Using UV-protective hair products
Keeping hair hydrated with regular conditioning treatments
Avoiding excessive heat styling when possible
Swimming Pools, Chlorine & Sea Water
A holiday swim is one of life's simple pleasures, but chlorine and salt water can be tough on hair.
Chlorine can strip natural oils from the hair, leaving it feeling dry and brittle, while salt water can contribute to dehydration and tangling.
According to NHS Inform, both chlorine and environmental factors can affect hair condition, making aftercare especially important during the summer months.
One of the easiest tips I give clients is to thoroughly wet your hair with fresh water before getting into the pool. Hair acts a bit like a sponge, so if it's already saturated with clean water, it's less likely to absorb as much chlorine.
After swimming, rinse your hair as soon as possible and follow up with a nourishing conditioner.
Summer Colour Care
Summer can be particularly challenging if you colour your hair.
Whether you're blonde, brunette, or have balayage, UV rays and swimming can cause colour to fade faster than usual. This is especially noticeable with lighter shades, which can sometimes lose their brightness after a holiday.

Easy Summer Styling Tips
One of the biggest trends this year is embracing natural texture and low-maintenance styling, which is perfect for summer.
Rather than fighting humidity and heat, work with your hair's natural movement where possible.
Some simple summer styling ideas include:
Loose waves
Soft ponytails
Braids and plaits
Low buns
Air-dried finishes

Healthy Hair Starts Before Your Holiday
One of the best things you can do before travelling is make sure your hair is in good condition.
A trim can remove dry ends before they become worse, while professional conditioning treatments can add moisture and strength ahead of sun exposure.
